Alexander Soros Ridiculed for Claiming Progressive Cities Are Actually Safer

Alexander Soros was widely ridiculed after attempting to claim that it’s actually rural republican areas, not blue cities, that are the true hotbeds of crime and violence.

In furthering the war on reality his father started, Alex shared an article by the LA Progressive titled “Where Are Murder Rates Actually Higher?” and subtitle “Conservative rural America now has higher homicide and gun murder rates than liberal big cities” by writer Mike Males.

Anyone who views Alex’s post on Twitter/X sees a community note attached to inform readers that the five most violent cities in the nation have Democrat mayors (though it's actually 19 of the top 20, with one being in a city that has nonparisan Mayoral elections).

The article hardly lives up to the subtitle, and begins by arguing that red states are more violent than blue states. As Soros is clearly aware due to his father’s funding of progressive DAs, crime is a highly localized issue. Within red states, crime is overwhelmingly concentrated in blue cities, so comparing crime at the state level makes no sense. As one analyst wisely put it; “I hate to use the term brilliance with Soros, but one of the brilliant things he realized is that when you want to get policy reform done with law and order and in this case, degrading it, going through a DA is so efficient because you don't have to go through a state legislature or go through a mayor to get something done.”

The rest of Males’ analysis is a handful of cherrypicked statistics to distract us away from the fact that the overwhelming majority of carnage in this country is in blue cities. For example, he claims that among white people specifically, the murder rate is rising faster in rural red areas than urban blue ones - but we’re not given any actual figures, just a rate of change. If rural red areas have lower homicide rates to begin with, an increase will be larger as a percent increase compared to a blue area that's already more violent.

Similarly torturing the statistics, Mural claims that there are 90 rural red counties that have higher murder rates than cities like New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Jersey City. But again, he’s cherrypicking rural red counties that have extremely low populations, and thus even a single homicide could, on paper, give them a Chicagoesque murder rate - and then comparing them to the few blue U.S. cities that have homicide rates below the national average. To further illustrate just how cherrypicked this is, Mural is resorting to picking 90 red counties whose combined populations would fit on a couple blocks in the cities he’s comparing them to.

So, how did this garbage get published in the first place, and how did Alex find it? As the Capital Research Center’s Parker Thayer uncovered, Males receives money from the Open Society Foundations.

In the end, Soros didn’t seem to convince anyone at all, with commenters split between mocking him for actually believing this, and pointing out countless errors in the Mural’s bad arguments.
