Yet another Joe Biden judicial nominee imploded when pressed to explain what exactly an “assault weapon” is.

United States District Judge Nancy Maldonado, who was nominated by Biden for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, was questioned about a brief she wrote defending an “assault weapons ban” that was being challenged in the Illinois state courts in the 2010s.

As the Daily Caller reported

“You said, ‘assault weapons may be banned because they’re extraordinarily dangerous and are not appropriate for legitimate self-defense purposes,’” Kennedy said. “Tell me what you meant by assault weapons.”

“Just to clarify there, I was local counsel,” Maldonado said, later claiming she did not write the brief Kennedy cited, but that she signed the brief due to a requirement from the Illinois Supreme Court.

“Tell me what you meant by assault weapons,” Kennedy said.

“I am not a gun expert,” Maldonado responded.

There’s no official definition on what exactly an “assault weapon” is, and laws attempting to regulate them are based on cosmetic features differentiating them from other types of firearms. But again, there are varying definitions on what combination of cosmetic features magically transform a gun into an assault weapon.

The term assault weapon doesn’t have anything to do with how firearms function mechanically, and was coined in the 1980s as part of an effort to ban semiautomatic weapons. In addition to liberals being scared by the term “assault rifle,” many of them are so clueless that they legitimately think semiautomatic weapons are actually automatic because the term has the word “automatic” in it.
