Mamdani marks Oct. 7 by accusing Israel of genocide, prompts backlash

New York City Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday marked the third anniversary of a Hamas attack on Israel that kicked off the Gaza war, by accusing Israel of genocide, which prompted backlash.

On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas stormed a series of Israeli border towns, killing roughly 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The attack prompted an Israeli invasion of Gaza, which has since become the subject of international outcry. Israel has faced accusations of genocide and war crimes throughout the conflict and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7," Mamdani posted on X. "On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss."
