The national average price of gasoline reached its highest level ever recorded for this point in the calendar year on Wednesday, according to GasBuddy.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, wrote in a social media post Wednesday that "the national average is now at its highest ever level this late in the calendar year."
De Haan said that meant the national average had "never been above $4/gal after Aug. 12 in any previous year."
The milestone followed two weeks of shifting price trends tracked by GasBuddy.
GasBuddy reported Monday that the national average fell 10.7 cents over the previous week to $3.94 a gallon. That figure was up 9.5 cents from a month earlier and 85.6 cents higher than a year ago.
